How to choose a High Chair

A few tips we discovered when making the decision on what high chair to buy.
  • More gadgets doesn't mean better.
  • There aren't many adjustable height chairs out there and they are big and very bulky.
  • Chairs that 'grow' with your child are a great idea but when you baby is small they are usually too big.
  • A solid centre bar is fantastic because it means you don't have to strap your child down which they usually hate.
  • A detachable tray is great but make sure it’s not so far from the seat that your younger babies can't reach it. This just makes them frustrated.
  • Any fabric - even the wipable kind is a pain because of creases and folds. We found the molded plastic seats perfect for sitting and very easy to wipe with a cloth after each meal.
The best high chair
is probably the Stokke Trip Trap (recent available in SA).

However like most awesome baby products, it costs a fortune. Their is an SA version which is more affordable called The Posture Perfect Baby Chair. We may well buy this one in the future as a toddler chair.

We started by hiring a standard looking cheap high chair from Infantasia (www.infantasia.com). This allowed us try out a chair and discover what elements and features we liked and did not like. It also allowed us to see what was essential for our child and what were just money spending whistles and bells. This worked very well and it only took me a month to realise what we features we needed and which features I truly hated.
During our search for a chair we were at the Primi Piatti at Lifestyles and used their high chair. When it arrived we thought it looked uncomfortable and that Josh probably wouldn’t like to sit in it. We’ve had many experiences at restaurants where he just refuses to sit in the chair provided., he makes his legs rigid and yells and nothing we do will make him site down. Turns out though that our son, the high chair conesiour, loved this chair. It fitted him like a glove and he stayed there and played for ages. So we quickly went about chatting to the management to see where they bought the chair. The on duty manager didn’t know so I emailed Primi on Monday and to their credit they came back to me very quickly with a response. So we ordered the Kiko Baby Chair from Furniture and their sales person (great service) delivered it the next week.

We like this chair because:
  • Its molded plastic so its very easy to wipe down
  • It has a solid bar between the baby’s legs
  • The tray is close to the back of the seat so it can be reached by little hands
  • It is light and easy to move.
  • The tray is removable so it can be used as a chair at the table.
  • It has rubber non-slip, non-scratch feet.

Another High chair tip is to get some drop clothes for under the chair. As your child gets older and starts to explore eating on their own lots of stuff ends up on the floor. Drop clothes mean you 1 don't spend all you time washing the floor under the chair, at the end of the day just throw the cloth in that wash 2 you save food from having to b thrown away every time it lands on the floor, you can simply pick up that cucumber and give it back. I bought cheap poly cotton in bright patterns (an extra entertainment factor for my little one as he often spends ages hanging over the side of his chair starring at the floor) about 1.2m long edged it and viola cheap, washable drop clothes.
