Learning about little boys - an unexpected crying incident.

According to the Baby Sense book experts there are 5 things you should check when your little on is crying. They are

  • Hunger/thirsty
  • Tiredness
  • Discomfort
  • Feeling Lonely

Of course we all know there is also winding and being too hot or too cold.

Well the other day I think I may have discovered another. It’s so obscure that I think it needs to be its own point on the list even though it’s related to discomfort. It’s not something I thought to check for and I had a crying, irritable child all afternoon.

I offered many types of food, milk and juice. I looked in the back of the nappy and felt the front for too much wee. I put a jersey on him. I tried distraction. I tried Prodol in case his gums were sore. I tried many different types of distraction. I tried cuddling. In the end, after a hardly eaten dinner, I did the only thing I had left in my arsenal. I ran a big hot bath for myself and Curious George.

When I undressed my son for the bath I found what may well have been the reason for his distress and irritability, although not even hind sight is 20 20 with littlies. He had a large crisp piece of spinach, from his lunch-time mini quiches, stuck to the tip of his little penis. Now not having a penis myself I can't relate but according to Super dad that must have been extremely vexing. Oh what it is to be a mom of a little boy, you learn something new every day.

Pretty soon I'll be learning about how to wee standing up so I can teach Curious George not to miss the toilet.
